West Coast Wildlife Centre

Wildlife Reserve in Franz Josef Glacier

The purpose of this feel-good attraction is breeding two of the world's rarest kiwi – the rowi and the Haast tokoeka. The entry fee is well worthwhile by the time you’ve viewed the conservation, glacier and heritage displays, hung out with kiwi in their ferny enclosure, and met the five resident tuatara (native reptiles). The backstage pass into the incubating and rearing area is a rare opportunity to learn how a species can be brought back from the brink of extinction.

Cafe and shop on-site.
