When driving down the Prithvi Hwy from Kathmandu, you eventually meet up with the mighty Trisuli River. It runs alongside the road thereafter, having sculpted the serpentine canyon ahead for millennia. With easy access from Kathmandu, this area is the centre of the budget rafting business. The highway will, unfortunately, be there to remind you that this is not wilderness rafting. But this long stretch of river also holds a little secret: you don't have to be a rafter to enjoy it. The hotels here are river resorts, often with their own sandy beaches, and even swimming pools. Cross a romantic suspension bridge over the Trisuli, and it is possible to feel worlds away. With fine scenery, and other adventure sports on offer, this is a great escape from Kathmandu, or some needed downtime for the weary traveller. So grab that hammock and beer, and get busy doing nothing.
