The stupa is ringed by shops selling Tibetan crafts, thangkas, Buddhist statues, jewellery and souvenirs, but you'll get better prices by exploring the winding side streets. Listen out for the tap-tap of metal-workers creating intricate repoussé designs using hammers and punches, a technique used for centuries to create panels for Nepal's temples and monasteries.
