Regular stops are made during the spectacular 37-mile (60-km) drive through the dune corridor down to the vlei; the route is marked with wooden poles. The first part of the journey takes you over a clay pan. Note the changing shades of the dunes as the sun moves higher in the sky, and soak up the solitude while surrounded by an impressive scene of desert beauty.Dead Vlei is at least a .6-mile (1-km) walk from the parking lot, so be sure to take drinking water with you.
