Kalaw was founded as a hill station by British civil servants fleeing the heat of the plains. The town still feels like a high-altitude holiday resort – the air is cool, the atmosphere is calm and the tree-lined streets still contain a smattering of colonial-era architecture – while the surrounding hills are fine for relatively easy day or overnight treks to Danu, Danaw, Palaung, Pa-O and Taung Yo villages.

Surrounded by Pa-O village and arranged neatly in straight rows, the 2478 hillside stupas at Kakku are one of the most impressive, yet least visited sights in Shan state. Build in numerous styles, a number of the stupas are simple in design whilst others are richly decorated and covered in deities. Legends refer to the creation of Kakku by Buddhist missionaries, dating back in the 3rd century and combine both simple and well-adorned stupas. Restoration of the complex has started years ago to maintain this awe-inspiring scene outside Inle Lake.
