Flights & getting there
Mandalay acts as a convenient gateway to Northern Myanmar with road and rail connections east up onto the plateau of Northern Shan State and river, rail, road and air connections to points north. River travel is slow but relaxing and includes destinations such as Katha and Bhamo. Rail connections on the Mandalay–Myitkyina line include the railhead of Naba for access to Katha and to Hopin, the jumping-off point for Indawgyi Lake. Flight connections from Mandalay include Myitkyina, the far-north town of Putao, and Bhamo. It is also possible to fly from Lashio to Mandalay or Yangon.
