Welcome to Risan

It wouldn’t be the first time Risan has risen from a slump. This is the oldest town on the bay, dating to at least the 3rd century BC when it was a fortified Illyrian town. After the Romans took over, the town exploded to a population of about 10,000, and its seaside was lined with sumptuous mansions.

Apart from the town's famous mosaics, not much remains from Risan's glory days, but those with a taste for history should take a stroll up Gabela, an atmospheric lane with interesting patterned cobbling dating from the Ottoman occupation.
