Gadjanje Kokota

Cultural in Perast

Possibly even more distasteful than it sounds (Gadjanje Kokota translates as 'Shooting a Cock'), this tradition commemorates a 1654 victory by the people of Perast over the Turks. A competition is held to shoot a rooster, a gory event best avoided by animal lovers. Less distressing parts of proceedings include a Catholic procession, solemn Mass and members of the Boka Navy dancing the kolo (wheel dance) in the square.
