We are about to book flights for Mongolia and are planning an end of August/September trip.
We love to hike and mountains and scenery are right at the top of our list, though we were initially interested in Khovsgol Lake we have read mixed opinions.
We are looking at between 12-14 nights flying in and out of ULN from Geneva (cheap flights). Would this give us a good opportunity to get in some hikes and visit the Gobi desert too?
Finally is early September a good time to visit?
I am considering going to Mongolia for entire May for a solo cycling tour. Initially, I thought about Northern or Central parts of the country.
My post is here since I am having two major doubts.
The first one is the weather - I thought about going to the northern parts of the country starting from the capital and maybe, if time allows, Karakorum. Places like Khovskol Lake or Khangai Nuruu together with Orkhon Valley seem to be in a reach. But isn't it too early?
The other doubt is…
This july I'm going with one friend to Mongolia, and we were able to buy one-way flight ticket to Dalanzadgad, but because of the dates it was impossible to buy the return, so we need to find a way to get back to UB.
We thought about car, but the travel agency are charging around USD 300 for the car (because they say the driver need to go back, so we are paying for 2 days + a lot of petrol).
So the questions are
- Do you know if there are other cheaper options?
- Is the bus…
I am going to Mongolia and looking for a travel buddy to make things cheaper and to go off the beaten path with.
Please let me know if you’re interested in visiting with me in mid May-mid June or mid June-mid July.
I’m also visiting some of the stan’s during one of those time periods, also looking for a travel buddy!
Lately I have read confusing information about crossing the border to China at Zamyn Uud to reach Beijing with bus instead of the rather expensive and non daily international train from UB to Beijing.
We just tried it yesterday so I can share our experience :-)
There is a daily train leaving Ulaanbaatar at 5.20pm to Zamyn Uud, arriving in the morning around 7.20am (+/- 20000 togrog).
As we left the train there was quite a crowd of people running to lots of buses and vans parked in…
Planning to visit Mongolia in early July this year, in and out Ulaan Baatar by Tran Siberia train. Hope to have any advice to help me decide either one of the following:
1) 4N in Irkutsk (Russia) / 5N in Mongolia
2) 2N in Irkutsk (Russia) / 7N in Mongolia
I am looking forward to experience the local culture in Mongolia other than the capital ie.: nomadic life, gers and the nature, Gobi Desert. I know if I choose 2), I would miss Olkhon Island but I'm still able to visit Lake Baikal?
We are two frenchbackpackers looking for some advice to trek in the Tavan Bogd Park (we will travelling in Mongolia fron end of July to mid-September).
With or without guide ? Which guide do you recommend ?
And just about Ulgii, do you have some advice for guesthouse or gercamp ?
Thanks you very much !
Eyeing on this 3-day tour starting on July 2nd, would like to find some travel buddies to lower the price.
I'm planning a trip to Mongolia in early to mid- September after the busy summer tourist season. My first destination would be Olgii and the Tavan Bogd National Park area. Will ger camps in the park still be open at that time or am I leaving it too late?
And flights from UB to Olgii, do you need to book well in advance or is a day or two sufficient?
