Travellers are drawn to this region by Tolbo Nuur, an elevated lake that's popular for swimming in summer and ice fishing in winter. The lake is about 50km south of Ölgii on the main road to Khovd City.
The tiny settlement of Tolbo (Толбо), 14km past the eastern edge of the lake and 3km off the main track, is a dusty strip of Kazakh houses and a single shop.
Tolbo sum (district) – along with Delüün sum to the south – is famous for its eagle-hunters (28 of them live here), and this is a good place to meet them. Craggy escarpments to the south are dotted with vertiginous nests that are plundered by Tolbo Kazakhs for their eaglets.
