Welcome to Shine-Ider & Jargalant
The borderlands between Khövsgöl and Arkhangai aimag largely constitute a series of dry, rocky valleys and raw, ochre upcountry. You can make a nice drive here, passing through towns such as Shine-Ider (Шинэ-Идэр) and pretty Jargalant (Жаргалант); the latter occupies a lovely position near the confluence of the Ider and Khonjil rivers. The road south out of Khövsgöl threads this harsh landscape like a needle through a hot, dusty quilt.
The sum (district) these towns occupy is perhaps most famous for being the homeland of a herder named Öndöör Gongor (Tall Gongor, 1879–1931), who was 2.57m tall.
