Getting There & Away
It takes about four hours to drive the 150km to Chandmani from Khovd City. The most scenic route is to turn off the paved Khovd–Altai Rd just south of Khar Us Nuur and travel around the southern tip of the lake, following the road between marshy shore and mountain until it turns east to hop over the northern tip of the Jargalant Khairkhan Uul massif. Then it's a straight shot south along lone and level plains to Chandmani, with several 600-year-old burial mounds (What3words: slideshow.accused.broadcaster) en route; they're marked by circles of standing stones.
Alternatively, you can stay on the paved road for longer and traverse around the southern tip of the Jargalant Khairkhan Uul range. This is also the way if you're coming up from Gobi-Altai.
Shared 4WDs/taxis (T10,000 per person, three to four hours, 150km) leave daily from Chandmani to Khovd in the afternoon when the vehicle is full.
