Zitácuaro is Michoacán’s sixth-largest city, but it feels like a provincial working-class town. Known primarily for its specialty breads and trout farms, it's no great looker and will confuse most visitors as they amble up and down the hilly streets. But Zitácuaro is a sensible base for visiting the butterflies at both the Cerro Pelón and the Piedra Herrada sanctuaries.
