Silver was unearthed nearby as early as 1534, and Real del Monte’s mines still produce quite a respectable amount of ore. Pachuca was also the gateway through which fútbol (soccer) entered Mexico, introduced in the 19th century by miners from Cornwall, England. The Cornish population also gave the town its signature dish, meat pastries known as pastes (and recognizable to any Brit as a Cornish pasty, albeit with some typically Mexican fillings).
