Join this excellent tour to find out about nopal, a type of cactus that is a highly nutritious food and used a great deal in local cooking. Take your seat (on hay bales in a trailer) and let entertaining, English-speaking Oscar guide you to fields where the nopal is grown and factories where it's bottled for food and made into cosmetics.
Hats (bring sunscreen too as you're outside a lot of the time), live music and lunch are provided, as is the chance to make your own nopal-based soap. Tours start from the main square in the small town of Valtierrilla, an hour south of San Miguel de Allende. It's important to book in advance – there's a minimum of 10 participants.
