On the northeast shore of the Laguna Catemaco, 8km from Catemaco, this well run ecological reserve preserves a small tract of dense rainforest. Here you can take part in a variety of activities including guided nature walks (from M$80), kayaking (M$60), mud baths (M$250) or sweating in a temascal (traditional steam room; M$250). Arrive by pirata (pick-up truck; M$12), taxi (M$80) or by boat (M$80 per person; hire in Catemaco).
There's a very pleasant lakeside restaurant (mains M$110 to M$175) and it's possible to stay overnight in solar-powered cabins (packages M$1100 to M$1900 including meals and some activities). You have to walk to the bathrooms, so it’s a mix of rustic and high-quality. It’s not for everyone, but it provides an incredible experience for those who want to be very close to nature while being reasonably comfortable.
