Heritage Malta Multisite Pass
If you're going to visit more than a few historical sites and museums in Valletta, it's well worth investing in a multisite pass (adult/child €50/25) from Heritage Malta (www.heritagemalta.org), which offers a total discount of over €200. This covers you for admission to all 23 Heritage Malta sites (except the Hypogeum), as well as the Malta National Aquarium. The pass is valid for 30 days from its first use.
The threat of a Turkish attack in 1634 prompted Grand Master Antoine de Paule to begin the construction of a second line of landward defences, the Notre Dame Ditch, about 1km southwest of Valletta's Great Ditch. These were designed by the Italian engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani, who gave his name to the town (Floriana) that grew up within these walls in the 18th century. The northern part is taken up with government buildings and offices, while the south side is mostly residential.
Floriana is just a five-minute walk from Valletta. All buses to and from Valletta also pass through Floriana.
Valletta's New Contemporary Edge
Inspired by Valletta's tenure as a European Capital of Culture in 2018, the city is now becoming known as an emerging European centre for art and design. An outstanding new museum and several modern and innovative galleries are all worth seeking out if you have an interest in the arts.
Housed in the 16th-century Auberge d'Italie, the original home of the Italian Knights of St John, MUŻA combines many original works from Malta's Museum of Fine Arts (which closed in 2016) with a more modern focus on promoting community-based exhibitions illuminating Malta's heritage and culture.
Private galleries worth visiting include Valletta Contemporary, opened in 2018 and inspiring the urban renewal of Triq il-Levant ('East St'), and Malta Contemporary Art, now in its own central space after several years operating from ad hoc venues around Malta. There's also regular, short-term pop-up exhibitions, often from resident artists, at Blitz; check the website to see what's scheduled.
