Laamu Atoll has about 12,600 people living on its 12 inhabited islands; these include Gan, the largest island in the country at a whopping 8km long. Gan is connected to its neighbours Kadhoo and Fonadhoo by causeways, creating the largest settled area in Maldives outside Male and Addu Atoll. The island of Kadhoo houses the atoll's airport, offering regular flights to Male.
As yet there is just one resort in Laamu and a few guesthouses on Gan, an undeveloped and traditional place despite its size. There are numerous archaeological sites in Laamu, with evidence of pre-Muslim civilisations on many islands. Almost nothing remains of these structures, however, as the stones were removed for use in more modern buildings.
