Easy to get to and perfect for a day or two of serious beach lounging, Pulau Besar’s long white-sand beach is fronted by a veritable swimming pool when the sea is calm. If you tire of vegging out, explore the trails to hidden beaches and through plenty of jungle. Note that the coral isn’t great and there is no dive operator, so you’ll have to spend your water time frolicking in the sandy-bottomed turquoise seas or snorkelling along the scattered bits of reef.

You can visit Pulau Besar on a day trip by hopping on the resort’s shuttle boats. At the time of research there were no public boats, although there have been some in the past – inquire at the Mersing jetty.
