Information from Hostelworld

Surrounded by World Heritage Mount Kinabalu National Park, Lupa Masa is an affordable introduction to the diversity of the Borneo rainforests. Made from local bamboo, electricity is supplied from its own mini hydro and food is organic whenever possible.

Take a day or overnight trek into the nearby forests or villages and farms or simply relax in one of the crystal clean rivers and waterfalls that surround Lupa Masa and 'forget time'.

Day or overnight bamboo rafting trips down jungle rivers can be organised.

Sleeping is in traditional style 'sulaps' on stretcher hammocks or basic but comfortable private 'pondoks' or huts on a mattress. Mosquito nets are provided but you should have your own sleep sheet or sleeping bag. Blankets can be rented at minimal cost with a deposit.

Lupa Masa can accommodate upto 24 guests at a time but we prefer to keep the numbers small and the experience big so it is unlikely there will be more than 10 or so guests during any one night.

You are surrounded by one of natures most bio-diverse gardens and there are thousands of butterflies, birds and strange insects to discover.

Lupa Masa uses its own supplied hydro electricity that comes from a river a short distance before the property- we believe a first in Borneo.

Lupa Masa is built from local giant bamboo - the most sustainable construction material there is. After two years new stands are already growing and within a few more years will be able for harvesting again. Roofing is local sourced palm thatch that is cool and less noisy than man made alternatives.

Food is grown and supplied locally from the surrounding villages.

Human waste goes into a septic tank and then reed bed, food waste is composted and plastic and other materials are limited in their use.

Before Lupa Masa was built there was illegal hunting taking place adjacent to the national park. This has now been reduced and in the future there will be night hides set up to view the nocturnal creatures. The surrounding forests are rich in mammals and birds including a tiny bat that lives inside the bamboo and often at dawn gibbons can be heard. Recent sightings have included the rarely seen Slow Loris, Western Tarsier and Hoses Civet cat. Wild orangutans are found in the surrounding forests but are very hard to find.

There are very few mosquitoes at Lupa Masa due to the intact eco-system that surrounds it.

Fortunately being next to the rainforest and national park clean water supply is not a problem and even in the dry season the small rivers that provide Lupa Masa do not dry up.

From Kota Kinabalu, capital of Sabah, Poring Hot Springs village and national park is a three hour drive away. Transport options are: any express bus bound for Sandakan, Tawau or Lahad Datu and buy ticket as far as Ranau village (many bus companies do these routes). From Ranau take local bus to Poring or share taxi (10 - 40 myr) - local bus are irregular. Travel time Ranau to Poring is 30 minutes. Once in the village you will be met by someone from Lupa Masa and taken into camp - approximately a 1 km walk through the forest - main bags should be stored in the village at the facilities provided (free of charge). Alternatively you can charter a taxi from Kota Kinabalu for approximately 200 myr per vehicle to take you the whole way non stop - Lupa Masa can help organise if required. Along the way you will pass the fantastic sight of 4,085 m high Mount Kinabalu (weather permitting). If coming or going to the mountain area the transfer time will of course be shorter - about 1 hour, taxis available in the park h.q car park.

No pets are allowed. Children are welcome but please discuss before booking. Advance booking is required due to remote location of Lupa Masa, Wi-fi is currently not available, but internet cafes can be found in Poring village, 20 minutes away.
