The Clifford School is a grand public building that began life as the Anglo-Chinese School in 1913. During the occupation, the school served as the headquarters of the Kempetai (the Japanese secret police).
The road next to the Clifford School leads up a hill to the black-and-white wooden Pahang Club, off Jln Lipis, a stately and dignified bungalow with wide, open verandahs.
If you’re in town on Friday evening, be sure to visit the excellent night market in the parking lot next to the bus station. It extends until about noon the next day.
