Worth a Trip: Brews & Views at Boh Tea Estate

There's no pastime more quintessentially Cameron Highlands than sipping a local brew, pinky finger outstretched, while gazing at valleys blanketed in tea plants. Boh Sungei Palas Tea Estate, set in a verdant patchwork of tea plantations, has the best cuppas and panoramic views.

The narrow approach road leads past worker housing and a Hindu temple (tea pickers are predominantly Indian) to the modern visitor centre, where you can witness tea production firsthand, and a cafe where you can sip a cuppa while surveying the plantations below. Free 15-minute tours showing the tea-making process are conducted half-hourly.

The estate is located in the hills north of Brinchang, off the road to Gunung Brinchang. Public buses running between Tanah Rata and Kampung Raja pass the turn-off to Gunung Brinchang. From there it’s 4km along the winding road, after which it’s another 15 minutes’ walk downhill to the visitor centre.

A taxi from Tanah Rata costs RM30 each way.

Tea, Honey & Strawberries

Three flavours define the Cameron Highlands: tea, which flourishes in the cool climate; strawberries, difficult to grow elsewhere in Malaysia; and honey, thanks to several enterprising apiaries.

An industry has grown around this tasty trio (along with vegetable farms, fruit growers, cacti and other homegrown produce). It's a big moneymaker so expect oversized strawberry-shaped souvenirs, ludicrously overpriced 'miracle' honey and more tea varieties than you thought possible. Most visitors simply sip, snack on, or shop for the produce, but there are hands-on activities, too.

Tea See it, smell it, drink it, buy it: the catch-all tea experience is the hugely popular showroom-cafe at Boh Sungei Palas. A quieter tea-sipping experience can be enjoyed at Boh Tea Garden (be careful if driving the serpentine road yourself). There are tea-with-a-view stop-offs along the main road, too; Cameron Valley Tea House 1 has a verdant lookout.

Strawberries Pick-your-own-strawberry experiences are dotted along the main road threading Tanah Rata and Brinchang, all similarly priced at around RM30 for 500g. Raaju's Hill has the best on-site strawberry drinks and snacks.

Honey There are several apiaries with adjoining gardens, museums and gigantic souvenir shops. Ee Feng Gu is a good all-rounder, with a landscaped garden and an indoor kids' maze (adult/child RM3/2). Tringkap Bee Farm also has a tiddly museum about the world of bees.
