Welcome to Belum-Temenggor Rainforest

Dam-created Lake Temenggor spiders its way through the rainforest and into 1175-sq-km Royal Belum State Park. Permits and guides are essential in the protected area, where tapirs, sun bears, tigers and elephants make their home. Mammal sightings are rare, even with a guide at dawn or dusk when animals are most active. But it's a thrill a minute for bird-watchers, with all 10 of Malaysia's hornbill species cawing from the ancient trees. Spot orchids, splash beneath waterfalls and forget about the lack of phone signal – humankind can wait.
