Take an overland journey that weaves through the countryside, secluded beaches, villages, rice fields, and plantations to the mangrove forest of Klias Wetland. You'll embark on a cruise downriver in search of proboscis monkeys, then eat a local dinner. Finish with an evening cruise to catch a glimpse of fireflies decorating the mangrove trees.
You will be picked up from your hotel in the afternoon and transferred to Beaufort for a 2-hour overland journey to the southern part of Sabah and Klias Wetland.Arriving at the Garama River Lodge, just a few miles away from the busy highway, soak up the serene beauty of the mangrove swamps. Enjoy light refreshments with cake while mingling with fellow travelers and learning about the local community from your guide. Then commence your cruise downriver, where you're likely to spot wild proboscis monkeys. You may also catch a glimpse of macaques, the rare silver langur (silvered leaf monkey), and occasional birds of prey like the crested serpent eagle and white-bellied sea eagle. A local simple dinner will be served by the riverbank. After dinner, re-board the boat and get a mesmerizing look as fireflies shimmer in the mangrove trees. You'll return to Kota Kinabalu in the late evening, with drop-off at your hotel.
