It is the abode of the spirits, the highest mountain in Malaysia, the dominant geographic feature of northern Borneo, the granite rock that has worn out countless challengers. Mt Kinabalu is all of this, and one of the most popular tourism attractions in Borneo. Don’t worry, though, you will still have moments of utter freedom, breathing in the only alpine air in Sabah, and if you’re lucky, enjoying a horizon that stretches to the Philippines. Or it will be cloudy. Whatever: the climb is still exhilarating.
