Drinking and nightlife in Madagascar

  • Nightlife in Antananarivo

    Kudéta Urban Club

Tana’s most exclusive (and expensive) bar turns from bar-lounge during the day to nightclub–DJ platform as the night draws in; there are regular parties and events.

  • Nightlife in Ilakaka

    Color Line Bar

To really enter the local scene in all its shadiness, attend the gem dealers’ party starting at 1am every Friday night at Color Line’s adjacent bar, known as Al2O3 (the formula for sapphire, naturally). This is only for a particular kind of traveller and is a long way from respectability – think the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie, without the aliens.

  • Nightlife in Ambatoloaka

    Djembe Disco

This is Nosy Be’s favourite nightclub, located at the end of the village on the road to Madirokely. It’s the place to be seen in the evenings – popular with local couples, expats and foreign men on the prowl. Besides having a dance floor, Djembe regularly hosts live-music events (big stars attract a higher price). There are pool tables, too.

  • Nightlife in Diego Suarez (Antsiranana)

    Taxi Be Nightclub

Taxi Be is the place to be in Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) – there's live music every night and everybody's here, locals and visitors. Try shaking your booty to the hot salegy (Kenyan-influenced music of the Sakalava tribe) dance music. The stage sports a Citroen 2CV taxi and the dance hall is enormous. Wear your best.

  • Nightlife in Antananarivo

    Buffet du Jardin

This long-standing bar is a firm favourite among locals, expats and tourists alike for anything from a morning coffee to evening drinks or a night out (it serves good food). There is live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and happy hour is at 6pm Thursdays and Saturdays.

  • Top ChoiceNightlife in Tamatave (Toamasina)

    Gare des Manguiers

An old railway carriage has been converted into the most happening bar in Tamatave. It has monthly cocktail specials using seasonal fruits, plus there's regular live music and other events and decent food is served within the same complex.

  • Nightlife in Antananarivo

    Madagascar Underground

This cool traveller hang-out is a fun bar to pass the night, but keep an eye out for live music many nights at 7pm when local musicians take to the small stage. An intimate, fun venue and a good place to meet other travellers.

  • Nightlife in Ambatoloaka

    La Sirène Disco

La Sirène draws the crowds on the nights of the week when Ambatoloaka's other disco, Djembe Disco, is closed.

  • Nightlife in Antananarivo

The clientele in this trendy bar can be a little seedy. It's a shame because the graffiti decor is fun and the music will have you on your feet.

  • Nightlife in Antananarivo

    Le Club

Tana’s biggest, flashiest club space, with modern design, has a DJ spinning recent tunes from the lofty winged booth above the dance floor.

  • Nightlife in Tamatave (Toamasina)

    Taxi Be Nightclub

This large venue in the centre of town features videos, lighting effects and DJs.

  • Nightlife in Hell-Ville (Andoany)

    Bar Ankoay

Spilling onto the street, the Ankoay ( ank-way) is Hell-Ville's most popular bar. Inside a shopping gallery, it's done up like the interior of a ship with lots of wood. It's hard to spot its name from the street, but you can't miss the early-evening crowds and the large thatched building. Get there early if you want a seat outside.

  • Nightlife in Ambatoloaka

    Le Taxi-Be

This lively bar is very popular with local vazaha (foreigners) and young Malagasy women. For all that, it’s not a creepy place. There's live music every night and a cut-out Renault 4L decorating the stage.

  • Nightlife in Maroantsetra

    Chez Binina

A typical Malagasy bar, open-air with a BBQ at the front churning out masikita (small kebabs). This is a nice place to stop for a drink, watch some football and enjoy Maroantsetra's good vibes.

  • Nightlife in Nosy Komba

    String Bar

Just the place to kick back with a cold beer, String Bar is an atmospheric place with a great sea view. It does food, too, particularly good chips. Ask what they have available as there's no menu.

  • Nightlife in Sambava

    Le Baladin

Sambava's only nightclub has plenty of uses: DJs host parties at weekends, it shows soccer matches and hosts beauty pageants. It's the place to be – dress the part!

  • Nightlife in Hell-Ville (Andoany)

    Hôtel Belle Vue Bar

Next to the hotel of the same name, this large bar has great views of the hillside. It's a good place for a beer.

  • Nightlife in Maroantsetra

    Super Goût

A friendly bar that comes into its own on vendredi joli (aka Friday night), with karaoke and music in general.

  • Nightlife in Tamatave (Toamasina)

    Queens Club

There's a laid-back ambience at this centrally located club, set in an old house with a veranda.

  • Nightlife in Vohémar

This place rocks on weekends with karaoke, slot machines and the occasional live music or DJ.
