Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance to cover any medical problems is strongly recommended.

Citizens of the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein receive free or reduced-cost, state-provided health-care cover with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If you qualify, make sure you arrange it in your home country prior to travelling to Luxembourg.

Worldwide travel insurance is available at www.lonelyplanet.com/travel-insurance. You can buy, extend and claim online any time – even if you’re already on the road.

Recommended Vaccinations

No vaccinations are required when travelling to Luxembourg, but the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that all travellers are covered for diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella and polio, regardless of their destination.

Availability & Cost of Health Care

Health care is widely available and standards are excellent.

For minor health concerns, visit a local pharmacy (chemist). For more serious problems, go to emergency wards at Luxembourg's hospitals.

In Luxembourg City, Zitha Klinik is a central clinic. For emergencies, it and two other hospitals are on rotation at night and weekends: call 112.

Tap Water

Luxembourg's tap water is safe to drink. The majority of drinking water is supplied by the reservoir Lac de la Haute Sûre, just outside Esch-sur-Sûre; the remainder is sourced from fresh-water springs.
