The main square in Ettelbrück is called Place Patton in honour of US Third Army general George S Patton who led a liberating US force into town on Christmas Day 1944. He famously noted: ‘No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his'. However, by December 1945 Patton himself was dead following a car accident in Germany. In an unlikely residential street, little General Patton Museum displays some interesting chunks of WWII aircraft and plays a half-hour black-and-white video about Patton's exploits. Otherwise, its selection of wartime photos, ammunition and helmets is considerably less impressive than the museum in Diekirch.
