Though it’s long been an everyday language, Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch in Luxembourgish) was only proclaimed Luxembourg’s national tongue in 1984. Almost all Luxembourgers also speak French and German, the two other official languages, with many also fluent in English. In written Luxembourgish, as in German, all nouns are capitalised.

Useful Luxembourgish phrases:

  • Moien (Hello)
  • Äddi (Goodbye)
  • Wann ech glift (Please)
  • Jo (Yes)
  • Neen (No)
  • Prost! (Cheers!)
  • Schwätzt dir Englesch? (Do you speak English?)
  • Pardon (Sorry)
  • Merci (Thank you)
