Private Tour of Kernave - Troy of Lithuania

Get ready for a journey to ancient Lithuania. There are few days in Summer when Kernave revives and one can feel himself in ancient city full of people, living their life as it was in 13th-14th century (these are Days of Live Archaeology at the beginning of July), but all other days a guide to help you with understanding of what this area is about. We will help you to blow off the dust from history and get acquainted with such Lithuanian values as nature, beliefs (religion), culture. In mid-13th century, Kernave – a wooden town of feudal artisans and merchants and one of the major economic centers of the country – was an important center and probably the first capital of Lithuania. Unfortunately, not for long. After the last attack of Teutonic knights (1390), the destroyed castle-fortresses on top of the mounds were never rebuilt and the town in the valley was never resettled. The area is beautiful. From an upper terrace on which the present-day modern village is located, there is a panoramic view over the entire archaeological site. Below flows the winding Neris River through the lush, green Pajauta Valley. Dominating the landscape are mounds of varying heights. There are more than one thousand of these ancient mounds in Lithuania, but this is the only place where you will find so many of them together. Vicissitudes of history and natural surroundings are the main source of inspiration for Lithuanian artists. And this is another “must see” – art and nature.
