With the weather on your side and half a day to spare, you can see most of Monrovia's major architectural landmarks on foot. Worthwhile historic buildings include the retro Rivoli Cinema and the EJ Roye building, which dominates the skyline and was once home to a spectacular auditorium.

The imposing Masonic Temple overlooks the city at the western end of Broad St, in the shadow of the abandoned Hotel Ducor; this was West Africa's finest hotel in the 1970s, where Idi Amin swam in the pool and Miriam Makeba sang in the bar.
