ItineraryDay 1: Underberg to OxbowStop At: New Oxbow LodgeWe depart from Underberg at 8am and tackle the 4x4 drive up the legendary Sani Pass. After a drinks break at the “Highest Pub in Africa” we make our way up Black Mountain Pass and down the beautiful Sehonghong river valley and on to the remote village of Makhupung. Here we visit the resident traditional healer, observe a unique song & dance routine and a secret ceremonial dance. Interact and picnic lunch with the villagers. A true, once in a lifetime, cultural experience.We then climb to the “Roof of Africa” past the Letsing Diamond Mine (world’s highest diamond mine), over the highest pass in Lesotho (Tlaeeng Pass, 3279m)(Africa’s highest motorable pass) and on to Oxbow Lodge. We visit the Liphofung Cave which has been used by people since prehistoric times and includes San rock art on the walls. Learn all about this special site.We then take a slow drive past numerous Basotho villages, through the town of Butha Buthe to to Ts’ehlanyane National Park.At Maliba Lodge you have the option to hike in the park or explore the five star facilities and surrounds of the Lodge. Spend the late afternoon taking in the dam views from the Katse Lodge.Duration: 12 hoursNo meals included on this day.Accommodation included: Overnight at Katse DamDay 4: Katse Dam to Thaba Bosiu / RomaStop At: Thaba Bosiu Cultural VillageAfter a tour of the dam wall we take a drive through the Highlands via Mohale Dam to Thaba Bosiu where the Basotho nation was built. Moshoeshoe and his people took occupation here and was never conquered by his invaders. Overnight at Thaba Bosiu/Roma.Next stop is Thaba Bosiu where the Basotho nation was built. Moshoeshoe and his people took occupation here and was never conquered by his invaders. This area was once home to cannibals and past generations of Basotho fled to the caves to hide from them.We then take a leisurely drive through to Roma for a brief look at some more dinosaur’s footprints before climbing back into the Lesotho Highlands and on to the town of Semongkong. Here you will have time to explore the daily life of this bustling, remote trading village. An optional Town Tour & Blanket Presentation are highlights and if you feel up to it a Donkey Pub Crawl is also an option. These falls create “smoke” because it is one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Southern Africa, with a flow of water falling 187 m. Before leaving the Kingdom of Lesotho we take one more scenic drive through the Lesotho Highlands to Qacha’s Nek border post. We pass through Matatiele before making our way back along the front of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains to Underberg.Duration: 8 hoursNo meals included on this day.No accommodation included on this day.
