Spend at least a full day in Beirut, indulging in the capital’s funky bars and cooler-than-cool cafe scene. A day trip to the marvellous ruins at Baalbek should occupy another day and could incorporate a winery visit in the Bekaa Valley. Next, head north, visiting the fairytale cave of Jeita Grotto before continuing to pretty Byblos, where ancient ruins are sprinkled beside an azure sea. On the fourth day, head up to the Qadisha Valley for a long nature hike or head to Tripoli to explore its super-atmospheric old town.
Take the four-day itinerary and add on whichever of Tripoli or the Qadisha Valley you didn't visit. Then head south for two days to explore Saida and Tyre, Mediterranean cities with tumultuous pasts and a wealth of ancient remains. Afterwards, head over to Deir Al Qamar to soak up the small-town atmosphere and the wonders of the Beiteddine Palace.
