Getting There & Away

Sekong's dusty bus station is 1.5km out of town to the north off Rte 16. Hourly services to Pakse (fan/air-con 35,000/40,000K, 3½ hours) pass through Paksong (20,000K, 1½ hours). There are also five daily buses to Attapeu (20,000K, two hours) and one departing in the early morning to Salavan (30,000K, 2½ hours).

It used to be common to travel by long-tail boat down the Se Kong river to Attapeu, but this ended with the improvement of Rte 16. These days finding a boatman willing to make the trip is difficult; in fact, just finding a boatman at all can take some effort. If you can find one who's willing, expect the trip to take four to six hours depending on the river level and cost close to US$100. Note that the river is fast and travellers have drowned doing this trip when their boat overturned.
