In November, colourful and lively festivals pop up all over Mexico and other parts of the world to celebrate Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It’s a way of celebrating and remembering the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Follow the simple steps below to paint your own decorative Day of the Dead stone skulls.
You will need:
- Round stones or pebbles with a flat surface
- Thick and thin paintbrushes
- Acrylic paint
- Felt-tip pens
- Cup of water
Gather your equipment!
Using a thick paintbrush, go over the entire top surface of one of your stones with a first coat of white paint. Leave to dry.
Once dry, paint a second coat of white over the stone and leave to dry again.
Using a felt-tip pen, draw and fill in in big black eyes.
Draw a little nose, like an upside-down heart shape, then a line of very straight teeth underneath.
Now it’s time to decorate your skull with paint and felt-tip pens! Little flowers, dots in circular patterns and curly swirls are common designs. Use as many colours as you like!
Repeat the steps above to create a whole set of Day of the Dead table decorations!
