Every February in Venice, people dressed in elegant costumes fill the walkways along the city’s famous winding canals. This is the Carnevale di Venezia (Carnival of Venice) where locals and visitors wear jewels, ruffles and feathers, as well as unique masks.

In the past, the masks enabled different members of Venetian society to come together and celebrate in their disguises. Now it’s a chance to dress up and join boat parades and parties! Experience the extravagance and make your very own Venetian glitter mask by following the simple steps below.

You will need:

  • Card
  • Pencil
  • Colouring pencils
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Lolly or ice-cream stick
  • Glitter glue
  • PVA glue

Step one

To make sure that your mask’s shape is symmetrical, draw half of it onto a folded piece of card.

Step two

Cut out the mask along the outer edges and unfold. Scissors are sharp! Take care when cutting out the mask – younger readers may require adult supervision.

Tip! The easiest way to cut the holes for the eyes is to fold the card gently, with the crease just over the eye hole, and snip a hole with your scissors. Unfold and then carefully cut out the rest of the eye hole.

Step three

From swirls to curls, loops to dots, draw patterns on your mask with a pencil.

Step four

Using bright colouring pencils, colour in your patterns.

Step five

To add sparkle to your mask, paint glitter glue over the patterns and then leave to dry.

Step six

Use PVA glue to attach the stick on as a handle and leave to dry. Imagine you’re at a fancy party and your mask is now ready to hold up and wear just like they do in Venice! If you truly love being in disguise, you can add elastic or string to the sides of the mask to keep it on for longer.
