We love finding out about all the interesting jobs there are in the world for our Planet's Coolest Jobs series and this month we are especially excited as we got to interview the creative brain behind one of our very own books, Myths and Legends of the World. Alli Brydon is a children's book author and had the important job of retelling the 21 dazzling stories of daring, deceit, reward and punishment which are contained within our book, which was beautifully-illustrated by Julia Iredale.

Describe your job in 5 words

Exciting, humbling, worthwhile, influential, creative

What does your job involve?

A lot of reading, thinking, plotting, and researching. Then...writing! My job – to the outside world – might look like daydreaming, then lots of fast scribbling, and then careful and slow typing. I tend to draft original ideas in a notebook with a pen, then transcribe them to my computer. After the first draft is miraculously on the screen, I then let it sit and marinate as long as I can before going back to revise the manuscript somewhere between 2 and 47 times! Sometimes I start off with an original story idea for a children’s book, and sometimes a publisher will come to me with a specific request. I like both, as they challenge my creativity in different ways.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

It has to be when I get to meet young readers. When I have an event at a bookstore, or receive letters from readers, it’s like fuel for my own creative spark. Kids are so enthusiastic about stories and are filled with oodles of imagination. It’s amazing to be able to absorb that excitement and spirit.

What advice would you give someone who dreams of having a job like yours?

Be a reader: it’s the first step to becoming a writer. Then, to become a writer...just do it. The more you write, the better you’ll get.

Tell us a story from your job

When I was writing Myths and Legends of the World for Lonely Planet Kids, I was able to tap into some amazing, well-done research that the publishing team had sent to get me started. Building from that, I spent many hours reading different versions of these myths and legends from all over the globe, to embed myself in these enduring stories from other cultures. From my little home office in rural England, I felt like I was travelling through time, and from place to place...only leaving my desk for a cup of tea!

Planet's coolest jobs: children's book author

Have you ever walked down the confectionary aisle in a shop and wondered just how all those chocolate bars and bags of sweets are created? While we might like to secretly believe it all comes from a modern version of Willy Wonka’s magical factory, the reality is that teams of hard-working, highly-professional people make sure those chocolate production lines keep running. We caught up with Cara Charlton, who works as a Materials Manager for Mondelēz  International, to find out more about her amazing job!

Describe your job in five words

Exciting; varied; challenging; rewarding and collaborative.

Wow, that sounds great! What does your job actually involve then?

My current role involves looking after the supply of raw ingredients & packaging for our 21 factories in Europe, factories that are making all sorts of brands such as Cadburys, Milka and Toblerone. We have to make sure that the factories are getting the materials they need to make the chocolate. This includes cocoa beans, raisins, nuts and anything that is being added to the chocolate - like popping candy. As lots of our raw materials have to travel quite a long way we spend much of our time solving issues when something is taking longer than anticipated. For example, our raisins come from Turkey and might get caught up in a rough sea crossing and we don’t want to have to stop production while we wait for them to arrive so I need to find a solution - which is either get the raisins on a plane or truck or find raisins from elsewhere quickly.

What does a typical day look like for Cara?

There is no typical day really because my job is so varied, one of the things I love about it! Normally I'm in the office just before 8am and always start by reading my emails. Through the day I will have meetings with suppliers where we review their performance from the past month and discuss ways we can work together to improve. Otherwise I will be working on urgent issues, trying to understand what the problem is and thinking up different solutions to solve it. I also get involved in the development of our new products working with suppliers to ensure that any new packaging materials and ingredients are ready at the factory for the first production.

Do you get sick of chocolate?

My previous role was working on new products in Research & Development and it is true that constantly tasting chocolate does lose its novelty after a while. Yes, really! Creating new chocolate bars is also much harder work than you might think: you have to make every single one by hand, using the same process over and over again until you get it right. Our office is really good at keeping us supplied with fruit and we have an onsite gym which helps when you need an antidote to the sweet stuff.

Do you get to travel with your job?

I’m based in Bournville in Birmingham, England, but as my work involves supplying all the different factories we have in Europe I do get to travel about four times a year. It might not surprise you to learn that one of my recent trips was to somewhere with a very well-known association with chocolate: I went to Zurich in Switzerland. But I’ve also been lucky enough to live in Stockholm for two years and to explore the lovely Polish city of Wroclaw too, among others.

Was it always your dream job to work with chocolate?

To be honest, I love working in the chocolate industry, but when I graduated my focus was to get a job in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. I knew that it would be an interesting and varied industry to work in so I opened up the kitchen cupboards, started looking at which companies made which products and then applied to their graduate recruitment schemes.

What’s the best thing about your job?

For me, the best thing about my job is that I can walk into any supermarket in Europe and see products that I’ve helped produce. I also like the fact that everyone has an opinion on the different things I’ve helped produce so it’s always fun to talk to people about what I do.

What advice would you give someone who wants to work in food production?

The most important thing is to find a job that you are passionate about as that makes it easier to handle the demanding aspects of the role. There is such a huge variety of jobs within food manufacturing that you shouldn’t be afraid of not knowing exactly what you want to do as you can always try something and then change to something else.

When you watch a film in the cinema or at home do you ever think about how the scene behind the actors has been created or how that scene contributes to your understanding of the characters and plot of what you are watching? Well, our latest instalment of planet’s coolest jobs is going to help you do just that. Meet Kimberley Fahey, set decorator extraordinaire with films as diverse as Spiderman: Far From Home, Aladdin, Suffragette, Rocketman and Jane Eyre under her name.

Describe your job in five words

Best job in the world!

What does your job involve?

As a set decorator in the film industry I work closely with the production designer to create a set with the right look and atmosphere to best tell the scripted story. My job involves sourcing props and decorations to create a specific aesthetic that supports and enhances the film’s story and also aids the actor’s performance. We are responsible for translating the writer and director’s vision of the film into reality and we look after everything you see in the frame, apart from the actor. We are visual storytellers and aim to describe the characters by surrounding them with particular items such as glasses on tables and pictures on walls and even down to the small personal trinkets they may have in their pockets or bedside table.

What does a typical day look like for Kim?

There is no typical day. No script is ever the same, so each job is completely different and each day brings a new challenge. Will it be creating a magical world, or a medieval village, or even an underwater skull dungeon?

I normally begin by breaking down the script, in story order and then the order in which the film will be shot. Then I begin putting images together on mood boards for each set, including the particular pieces of furniture, rugs and lighting that I feel will work within the set. There is usually a lot of chatting and eliminating of ideas between the Production designer and the director before decisions are made. Once the production designer is happy with our suggestions of furniture, wallpaper, lighting, colours, fabrics and textures, we can start buying and confirming prop hires. You can see why we need a really strong team who work collaboratively together to make it all happen. There’s a lot to get organised!

Once we have everything together I begin working on the dressing plan, which includes every little detail we are putting into the actual set. This document is handed to all the Set Decorating and Props team so they know what props are coming in and where they will be dressed into the set. When we say dressed we don’t mean clothes but where the different pieces need to go on the set.

Do you get to travel with your job?

Yes, I have to go on a location recce which is where we go to check out the location before filming begins. This is essential for our department to find out if there are restrictions and to measure up and work out whether our ideas will work in the spaces. I also get to travel in time! I love working on period films, as I can discover beautiful historical props with a story to tell. It’s really important to be as accurate as you can so I wish I could really time travel!

What’s the best thing about your job?

So many different things! The first has to be getting to visit some of the most amazing locations, from remote caves in Bulgaria, to tunnels in Malta and mountains in Spain. And it’s not just the location but what we get to do while we are there. I’ve dressed a pirate ship as we sailed the Black Sea, been stranded on an island and painted a horse pink. Being part of a wonderful team who works so well together to create the seemingly impossible comes a very close second for the best thing about my job. It’s an incredible experience to achieve the unachievable and to be part of making something beautiful and lasting. Lastly, I love the fact that every job teaches me something new so I never stop learning.

Tell us something we might not know about set design.

Did you know that the UK film industry has the best prop hire houses in the world? These are where you can hire anything from gigantic Roman statues to 1920s embroidered silk scarfs and jewel-encrusted thrones. Each prop hire house has its own unique collection of props that are not held anywhere else, so depending on what sort of job I’m working on, I can visit these diverse collections and source the required props.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a set decorator?

An interest and enthusiasm for crafts, art history, culture and design are key. But the main advice would be to follow your heart and be prepared to work hard. Working as a Set Decorator is a hugely rewarding creative career but it is a big commitment, involving long and varied hours and constant problem-solving. It’s really important to have lots of energy, to not be afraid to ask questions and to keep smiling.

Planet's coolest jobs: set decorator

Here at Lonely Planet Kids we’re celebrating our friends in the animal kingdom with the publication of our Animal Atlas this month. So we thought it would be a great opportunity to talk to someone who helps animals every day for our series on the planet’s coolest jobs. We caught up with Jess White, who works as a horse vet based in Newmarket, England, to find out what her job entails, why she wanted to do it - and why some horses regularly travel the world.

Describe your job in five words!

Rewarding, outdoors, sociable, varied, practical

What does your job involve?

Vets can look after many different animals but I specifically focus on horses and I work at Newmarket Equine Hospital which, as the name suggests, is a hospital just for horses. Newmarket is a big centre in the UK for horse-racing so much of our work involves looking after racehorses and helping to breed and safely deliver foals who will go on to become racehorses. We also look after ponies, leisure horses and anything else in the horse family, although we don’t have many zebras on our books!

We’ve never even heard of an equine hospital before! Tell us about it.

It has specialist vets, surgeons, operating theatres, x-ray rooms and an intensive care unit, all so we can provide our horses with the specific care and attention that they need.

What does a typical day look like for Jess?

That’s one of the best things about being a vet: no single day looks the same as another and the job changes with the seasons. A lot of my days are spent out and about in my car seeing patients and clients, but in the spring when most foals are being born I spend more time with them either on stud farms or in the hospital. Each day brings something new and different, and you never know what the next phone call will bring. There’s plenty to keep us busy!

Do you get to travel with your job?

Yes! Most of our practice’s patients are within an hour or two of Newmarket, but we often get asked to see patients further away in the UK, Europe or further afield. We also get to fly with horses that are being transported around the world either for racing or breeding reasons. Being in a plane with up to 70 horses is a fascinating experience. We fly with them to keep an eye on them both in the air and when they arrive at their destination. The horses travel remarkably well, especially when they travel in groups, and thankfully we have few problems onboard.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Apart from the hugely rewarding task of helping sick animals get better, one of the best things about my job is that as a UK-qualified vet I can work in many different countries. Vets are needed all over the world, working with many species in different roles, from caring for pets to zoo vets, research and charity work. This flexibility gives us a vast number of exciting opportunities and the job can take you nearly anywhere you want to go!

One of the words you used to describe your job was sociable. Isn’t it just about looking after the horses?

Yes you might think that but every animal has a human owner so working well with people is a key part of being a vet. You need to listen properly to understand what is going on, explain things clearly so that the correct care can be given and reassure the owners that their loved animal is in good hands.

Have you always loved horses?

Yes, I’ve been lucky enough to have horses in my life since I was a little girl. They are remarkable animals because of the trust and relationship they can build with us. Humans first domesticated horses about 5000 years ago and since then we have used them as work animals, they have fought with us in battle and in more recent times we have trained them to jump, race, ‘dance’ (when doing dressage) or simply be affectionate companions. Every single day at work something will remind me of just how trusting, intelligent and unique horses and ponies are.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a vet?

If you love animals and caring for them, and you think you might like to be a vet then the best thing you can do is get lots of hands-on experience with animals. Lots of people want to be vets, and the more experience you have the better your chances of getting into a university. Help your local dog-walker, volunteer at your nearby farm, or maybe get involved in mucking out horses at the weekend, anything! Speak to your local vet too if you have one. We all started our journey to becoming a vet when we were young, and so can have lots of useful advice to help you along your way.

We all have our favourite video games, but have you ever wondered how the colourful creatures and otherworldly environments within them come to life? Anthony McKenzie is a Games Environment Artist, spending his time at work devising, designing and creating aspects of many different video and computer games, taking them from rough ideas to the real-life features in the games you see on shelves.

Innovative, fun, imaginative, diverse, rewarding!

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The coolest thing is definitely crafting almost unimaginable worlds for players to experience, and then getting to see them interact with those worlds. Now that game-streaming has become popular, I can see how gamers are enjoying the worlds I've helped to create.

What kind of games do you work on?

I've had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of games, from a creative rollercoaster simulator to a dinosaur park management game!

What sort of things do you design?

I work on creating the details that fill up the worlds. This means digitally sculpting, building and painting the amazing designs from our concept artists that will make the fantasy worlds and landscapes of the games really come to life. One day is never the same as the last!

How did you become a Games Environment Artist?

As a kid I was constantly drawing out stories from my imagination and playing games. Eventually, being surrounded by computers, I went from paper and pens to owning my first digital drawing tablet! I started out designing 2D art, but I felt something was missing – I kept finding myself wanting to bring my flat designs to life, which led me to study and learn 3D design through an Animation Arts degree at university.

What was the most exciting game you've ever worked on?

Planet Coaster was great fun – coming into work to research theme parks from around the world, and then translate those iconic features into a stylised game world!

What's the coolest thing you've ever designed?

The coolest thing I've ever created was an enormous, pirate-themed, animatronic creature! It was based on the mythical Kraken monster, with enormous tentacles and glowing eyes that could jump out at guests in the virtual theme park.

If you didn't work in the industry you do, what other career path would you have chosen?

I couldn't imagine not working in a creative field... Perhaps I would brush the dust off my old camera lens and pursue a career in travel photography. I could explore the world instead of making new virtual ones!

What advice would you give someone who dreams of getting a job like yours?

Practice different kinds of art as much as you can, even in small ways – the most valuable thing in game art is your observational skill, and how well you can integrate elements of the real world into games. Use any inspiration to start getting creative in 3D software packages – there are plenty available on all kinds of platforms these days!

The planet's coolest jobs: computer game designer

Spending your working day spotting a host of wildlife from whales to elephant seals, climbing up lighthouses and teaching people about the wonders of nature must be pretty cool, right? Carlo Arreglo, interpretive park ranger at Point Reyes National Seashore in California, would definitely agree. We caught up with Carlo to hear all about how he spends his days and which animals he's always extra happy to see...

Education, ranger-ing, stewardship, inclusive, inspiring!

What does your job involve?

As a park ranger, I am always out and about! What I love about this job is that the day-to-day is always totally different. One day I might be stationed at the Bear Valley visitor centre, helping people from all over the world figure out how to spend their day at Point Reyes National Seashore; the next I might be at Drakes Beach, pointing out elephant seals; and other days I might be leading a bird programme, or climbing 308 steps up the historic lighthouse built in 1870.

What animals do you often see whilst at work?

Wow, well the ones that people really want to see are the gray whales migrating past the Point Reyes Headlands, or the northern elephant seals when they haul themselves out of the water to breed, give birth and molt, or the majestic tule elk. Personally though, I have a soft spot for birds, which is lucky because Point Reyes is one of the best spots in the country for birdwatching – over half of all North American bird species have been recorded here!

What challenges do you often face as a part of your job?

Finding enough time to do everything I need to do. But on those days when the fog clears at the lighthouse and I point out whales to visitors that have never seen them, when peregrine falcons scream past a group of us, on days like that, I have to pinch myself to realise it's not a dream that I get to work here.

How did you become a park ranger?

I started as a volunteer and then got hired as a seasonal park guide and through hard work, timing, networking and a little bit of luck, I got a permanent park ranger position here at my dream park.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a similar career to you?

Start out as a volunteer, ideally in the park you want to eventually work in. If you want to be a ranger-naturalist like me, have a curious mind driven by the need to learn many new things every day.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Being able to share my excitement for this protected land and seascape with everyone that visits!

The planet's coolest jobs: National Park ranger

This month, in our series of the planet’s coolest jobs, we talk to Emma Sherlock, Senior Curator of Free-living worms and Porifera at the Natural History Museum. Emma spends her working life studying these wriggly creatures, researching how they build underground homes, create subterranean ecosystems and make it possible for all kinds of other species to exist. Keen to find out just how important the humble earthworm is? Let’s dig a little deeper…

What exactly is a ‘free-living’ worm?

The two main types of worms we work with here at the museum are free-living and parasitic. I look after the free-living nematodes (roundworms) and the annelids (segmented worms), which include earthworms, leeches and marine worms. I also look after the lineus longissimus (bootlace worms) – some of them can reach up to 50m!

What’s the coolest thing about your job?

Going to places where earthworm kingdoms are unexplored! It’s a bit like going back in time and experiencing a fraction of what people like Charles Darwin experienced. I often go to primary forests and countries with high biodiversity to find new species. A nameless species can't be conserved or protected, so by putting a name to a new species you’re helping the whole conservation effort – in that respect you’re really making a difference.

Tell us a little about your typical work day

My days are varied – I never know what’s going to appear. Sometimes my colleagues will come back from Antarctica and other incredible places with a host of amazing new discoveries. I have a library of ‘pickled things’ – I look at the new specimens, find out their cool stories, and then get them all into my pickled library. I chat to worm researchers all over the world, and do my own research. At least once a day I set up my microscope, do a bit of distance counting and look at segment numbers between structures to try and discover something new. I’m working on a paper at the moment that shows how two species that were lumped together are definitely different. After a lot of measuring, I’ve found a very small characteristic that separates them.

How did you become an earthworm expert?

As a kid I was part of my local natural history society – I loved butterflies and bugs and digging up worms to look at them. At university I studied zoology and then got a summer job working at the Natural History Museum. At the end of the summer they offered me a role in the specialist natural history bookshop, and while I was there I volunteered in the parasitic worm department, sifting through gorilla poo! Then a job came up in free-living worms, which I got. My first visitor in that role was Victor Pop, a man from Romania who had discovered some of the largest earthworm species in Europe. He was really inspirational and I went out to his lab in Romania, trained there and never looked back.

You recently went on a worm hunt to Nicaragua – tell us about that

A volunteering company were doing some conservation work there and could see that there were a lot of earthworm species, but absolutely none had been registered. So I went out to investigate. We sampled a load of areas and habitats and got 80 new species records for the country, and two new species for science in general.

How important are earthworms? What can they teach us about the earth itself?

They’re incredibly important! They are ecosystem engineers, working together as a unit with different jobs: breaking up the soil, aerating it to allow oxygen down, diminishing the effects of flooding with their burrows, breaking down all the dead organic matter on the surface and bringing nutrients back into the soil. If you go to an area where there are no earthworms, you know there’s something wrong with that soil.

You are the president of the Earthworm Society of Britain – what does that involve?

A lot of trying to enthuse people about earthworms. What we’re really after is getting biological recorders up and down the country to start recording earthworms, because one big problem we have is that there’s no baseline data, even for the UK. We just don’t know where the species are or which are the rare ones. There was one species we hadn’t seen for 32 years, but then we saw it again recently because we were all out there looking for earthworms and recording them. If we get more data we can tell if habitat destruction is a problem, or how climate change will affect the earthworms. If anyone wants to get involved come on our courses, get trained up and be a county recorder. Quite often there’ll be grid squares with no earthworms recorded at all, so it’s very easy to record ‘firsts’, which can be really satisfying.

What is your best piece of advice for someone who’d love to pursue a career like yours?

Probably two things. Firstly, it really helps to get a good degree, which involves working hard. The other thing is volunteering. Pretty much all the curators at the museum have volunteered at some point before – you gain a lot of experience through volunteering, and people in the field can get to know you. You can volunteer at most museums, sometimes in zoos and wildlife parks, and, of course, help us out at the Earthworm Society.

Have you ever spent time doodling away, daydreaming about being a famous fashion designer? Or wondered about the ideas and creation process behind beautiful clothes and costumes? This month we chatted to Theresa Wilson, who works as a costume designer, creating incredible pieces to be worn in all manner of theatre and opera performances. How do you go from sketches on paper to real life designs that bring a character to life? Let's find out...

Creativity, passion, challenge, teamwork, travel!

What sort of costumes do you design?

All kinds! Depending on the concept the costumes vary from historical and classic to modern and unusual. The great thing about being a costume designer is that there is no creative limit...

How did you become a costume designer?

Art, music and culture were always present and a big part of my life growing up. From an early age, I loved crafting and decided that I wanted to study fashion design. Then during my studies I got accepted to do an internship at the Vienna State Opera. Immediately I was fascinated by the people, the feeling of being in the theatre, and how all forms of art come together. You could say it was love at first sight – I've stuck with it ever since.

How do you start designing a particular costume? What's the first step of the process?

Usually by discussing the costume we are designing with my team. Together we share ideas and develop a concept. After that, I research time periods, themes and fabrics and start to sketch or collect pictures that inspire me!

What's your best piece of advice for someone who is interested in pursuing a career like yours?

Building a network of contacts is really important in this type of job. Try and meet people in the business, even if they don't do the exact job you are interested in, and aim to do an internship to see if you like it!

If you hadn't become a designer, what other job would you like to have?

Some other kind of designer I think, or maybe a teacher... But really, there’s no other job I could see myself doing, I just love it!

The planet's coolest jobs: costume designer

From spaceships to mansions, curious creatures to futuristic machines, there's nothing you can't build out of LEGO ®. With just a pile of coloured bricks and a bit of imagination, you can let your creativity run riot, whipping up entire towns, cities... even worlds. Lucy Gullon is a model maker at LEGOLAND® Windsor, spending her days devising and building miniature LEGO® creations for visitors to enjoy day after day. What's it like to do Lucy's job? Read on to find out!

What does your job involve?

First thing every morning we look over all of the models throughout the resort and two hotels to check whether they need repairing in any way. After that, my tasks vary – some days I spend designing and prototyping LEGO® models that I'll build in the future, other times I build models for the resort, or some days I am out installing new model content in the theme park.

At the moment I’m building hundreds of new LEGO® models for Miniland London, ready for when the new theme park opens in March. Miniland recreates world famous landmarks in miniature LEGO® form. We’re building London buses, black cabs, telephone boxes, Covent Garden entertainers, boats, police officers and much more. We like to include a few fun, distinctive models for our guests to spot too, so we’ve even created a LEGO® Mary Poppins!

Describe your job in five words!

Creative, fun, innovative, imaginative and exciting!

What's the best thing you've ever made from LEGO®?

It’s hard to choose, but I think my favourite thing I’ve made is a camping scene for Miniland. It features lots of fun little details, such as people playing swing ball, having a water balloon fight, roasting marshmallows, and even a cheeky dog eating from a picnic basket.

How do you come up with ideas for what to build?

This varies depending on the project we’re working on – sometimes very specific models are required for a project. For example, this year we're opening the Haunted House Monster Party ride, which requires loads of spookily-themed models to decorate it. If I’m building things for Miniland, I use reference photographs to recreate iconic buildings and scenes. I also like to come up with ideas about the backstories of the characters I feature in the scenes to bring them to life.

Have you ever experienced a disastrous collapse of a LEGO® model you've built?

I haven’t experienced a model collapse thankfully! I tie in all of the bricks I use as I build, which makes the model very strong. Some of the larger models can take the weight of someone standing on them! We also use a special glue to hold the bricks together, and really large models – such as our 6-metre-tall pharaoh in Kingdom of the Pharaohs – also have a steel frame inside them.

How did you become a LEGOLAND® model maker?

I studied television and film set design at university, and really enjoyed the model making aspect of the course. I then saw that there was a position being advertised at the LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort, which looked so exciting, and here I am now!

Do you build LEGO® models at home, or do you get tired of doing it all day?

I rarely build LEGO ® models at home. Instead, I tend to draw and paint so that I'm still being creative, but it’s also something a bit different from my day to day.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Getting to build new and exciting LEGO ® models that guests visiting the LEGOLAND ® Windsor Resort will get to enjoy. Last year I helped to recreate the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding out of LEGO ® for Miniland. We unveiled the wedding scene in front of a 39,960 brick model of Windsor Castle – that was amazing.
