Welcome to North of Mombasa
From Nyali to Shanzu, it’s all big-box beach resorts, highway junctions, bottle-green palms and acres of sisal. But there are sights of interest for independent travellers. These include the stunning Swahili ruins of Jumba la Mtwana, the raucous fishing village of Mtwapa and some nice nature parks. Beyond that, the high-end resorts are hardly the ‘real Kenya’ and from December to April, seaweed often clogs the sand. Still, for most of the year this is tropical pleasantness, if not paradise. Expect lots of makuti (thatched-roof) chic.
