Inhabiting the rocky slopes of a kopje that rises above the Tsavo plains, Kipalo Hills is a wonderful hideaway with superlative views. The nicely spaced tents all have expansive vistas from their verandahs and have tastefully turned out interiors; they're extremely comfortable rather than luxurious. The public areas are utterly lovely and seem to emerge from the rocks themselves.
From a distance, the camp is barely visible, and the welcome addition of stunning African art works to the mix lends the whole property a genuinely boutique atmosphere. And by night, you can have that rare experience of gazing out across the plains without a single light or sign of the human presence interrupting the silence and pristine darkness of the African night.
Possible activities included in the all-inclusive rates are guided walking safaris, perfectly located sundowners, visits to a local school and Taita cultural performances; excursions into Tsavo West are not included. A percentage of the profits go straight to the local community.
