Dangers & Annoyances

Despite the many examples in Laikipia of conservation partnerships between local communities and ranch owners, the area has been shaken recently due to several attacks on local ranches. The co-owner of Sosian Lodge, Tristan Voorspuy, was killed in March 2017 while inspecting the surrounding 97-sq-km central Laikipia ranch, leading to the temporary closure of Sosian.

The attacks have been led by armed gangs who, prompted by a crippling drought, have moved their cattle herds into the Laikipia plateau in search of grazing land. Thus far, tourists have not been caught up in the violence, though it is recommended that you ask your lodge about whether there are any areas of their ranch that may be deemed unsafe.
