Border Permit

As of 2017, visitors who are not Kazakh citizens need to apply for a border permit if they wish to travel pretty much anywhere in Altay, even Ridder. Top destinations such as Lake Markakol, Mt Belukha, Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi and the West Altay National Reserve near Poperechnoe village all require a permit. A permit takes 10 business days to process, costs US$50 and requires you to submit your proposed route and dates of travel. The easiest way to get it is via Caravanistan (www.caravanistan.com).
