Getting There & Away
Unless you're using a Japan Rail pass, bus is the cheaper way to travel from Beppu. It's also usually faster, and the route through the mountains is like a mini-sightseeing tour. Buses connect JR Beppu Station with Yufuin throughout the day (one way/return ¥900/1500, 65 minutes). One-way tickets are sold on board; buy return tickets at the Beppu Station tourist information office or Yufuin bus terminal.
Frequent express buses serve Fukuoka (¥2880, two hours), while a couple of departures a day go to Kurokawa Onsen (¥2000, 1½ hours), Aso (¥3000, 2½ hours) and Kumamoto (¥4200, 4½ hours).
Trains connect Beppu with Yufuin (futsū ¥1110, 90 minutes) via Ōita. A few daily Yufu or Yufuin-no-mori tokkyū trains cost ¥1930/2450 for non-reserved/reserved seats, and take about 65 minutes with no change of train; some trains have reserved seats only.
