Every year, many visitors to Japan purchase a JR Pass without researching it properly, and end up wasting a large amount of money. Every week, visitors to the Thorntree post questions about the JR Pass, many of which have been answered on here before.

If you are thinking about purchasing a JR Pass for your trip to Japan, please read through this FAQ before buying it or posting a question on the Thorntree:

What is the JR Pass?
What is JR?
What type of tourist is it aimed for?

Has anyone ever been to any of the islands in Marugame and the west of Kagawa? Japan-guide gives them a fair amount of coverage, and some of the islands look rather interesting. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or information which they could share, on what would be nice to visit.

Does anyone want to give me their thoughts on Naoshima?

On the one hand, it strikes me as a place that's probably overly touristy, in the way that I find off putting. A Takayama-by-the-sea, if you will. Also, I don't have a great deal of interest in modern art installations.

On the other hand, it seems a little silly to ignore one of the most popular tourist attractions in my neighborhood of the country, and I can't imagine any island in the beautiful Inland Sea could be that bad. What do you…

I will be in Kyoto to see the Gion Matsuri Festival on July 17th. I imagine that the crowds to the shrines afterwards will be a madhouse. What are some recommended things to do around Central Kyoto that might not be as packed.

Also, I would love to see some live music in the night, preferably rock or metal, any good clubs of that sort? I would also be open for some theater or cultural events for the evening, after 7pm. I do see that Gion Corner has a performance at 7pm. Any other ideas?

Hi, do you think it is worth it taking the JR pass for a week or our travels:
Tokyo-Nikko-Nagoya-Koyasan-Hiroshima-Osaka-Kyoto?
Thank you.

we were planning our trip with a rental car but later found out our country issued IDP is not valid in Japan.

i am in a fix if we can make our 8 day trip (reaching narita on 27th october night- leaving from haneda on 4th night) through trains & buses. We were thinking of stopping in 8 different places each night & travelling during the day. we did our hotel bookings as well. We will probably have to change the plan as we would be using public transport.

we are planning to visit natural autumn…

Hello. I was interested in doing a two-three day backpacking trip in the Nagano or Gifu prefecture, but don't know where to go. I'd love to really get up in the mountains (the more away from people- the better!), and have done extensive trekking before. If you could include a map, or a link to one I could buy, that would also be super awesome!

This is a bit of a niche question.

Does anyone have any tips for finding cheap parking lots in Japan online? I am an undeniable cheap ass when it comes to parking, and I usually go out of my way to find places where I can park for free. That doesn't work overnight though. So if I have to pay for parking, how do I go about minimizing what I have to pay?

My particular situation is this: I need to park my car somewhere in Takamatsu while I visit Shodoshima for the weekend. The parking lots next…
