Shinjuku is a convenient base, popular with travellers and with options at all price levels. Most accommodations are a good 10 minutes' walk from the main train station, so look for places that are also near handy subway stations, like Nishi-Shinjuku (Marunouchi line) and Higashi-Shinjuku (Ōedo and Fukutoshin lines). Note that many budget hotels are in the red-light district, Kabukichō; while not dangerous exactly, the district does have seedy pockets and solo female travellers in particular might feel uncomfortable. Shin-Ōkubo and Ikebukuro, one and four stops north of Shinjuku on the Yamanote line (respectively), have good options for budget travellers.
