The east side of Shinjuku Station is home to Tokyo's largest nightlife district. In fact, it's so large that it contains multiple districts within it: Shinjuku-nichōme is Tokyo's LGBT enclave; Shinjuku-sanchōme is full of izakaya (Japanese pub-eateries) and bars popular with commuters stopping off on their way home; the tiny bars of Golden Gai are a draw for artists, musicians and, increasingly, travellers. Running through the middle of this is Yasukuni-dōri, the main artery, electrified with a thousand glowing signs and lined with karaoke parlours and wallet-friendly chain izakaya. Ikebukuro, too, has lots of bars and izakaya around the train station.
