Top Tips

The JR Chūō line is only the second-most crowded line in the city, but that still means it runs at nearly 200% capacity during rush hour. Odds are you'll be going in the opposite direction, which won't be nearly as bad: heading out west in the morning when the commuters are going east towards Shinjuku, and vice versa in the evening. The local Sōbu line, which runs on the same tracks but makes more stops, is always less crowded.
