Getting There & Away
Hakodate is the transport hub for the region. It has an airport, Hakodate Airport, ferry service to and from Aomori on Honshū and the terminus for the new Hokkaidō Shinkansen. Note that the shinkansen station, JR Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, is north of the city, and requires a transfer and 20-minute train ride to JR Hakodate Station, in the city proper. From here, there are good public transport links to central Hokkaidō.
Note that the JR Esashi line, connecting Hakodate to Esashi and Matsumae, was discontinued in 2016.
