Welcome to Shimane Prefecture
In Shimane Prefecture (島根県; Shimane-ken), along the San-in coastline on the Sea of Japan, the pace of life is decidedly slower than on the San-yō coast and the people are particularly friendly towards visitors. Crowned by Matsue and its original castle, cities are few and far between. Escape to the far-flung Oki Islands for a taste of unpolished life by the sea and interesting diving, or to the mountain town of Tsuwano, where koi swim alongside the street. Izumo Taisha, the oldest Shintō shrine, is a stroll back in time. Shimane may be off the beaten track, but there is no shortage of reasons to visit.
