Every year, many visitors to Japan purchase a JR Pass without researching it properly, and end up wasting a large amount of money. Every week, visitors to the Thorntree post questions about the JR Pass, many of which have been answered on here before.

If you are thinking about purchasing a JR Pass for your trip to Japan, please read through this FAQ before buying it or posting a question on the Thorntree:

What is the JR Pass?
What is JR?
What type of tourist is it aimed for?

This might seem like an odd request, but I am feeling increasingly called to go to Japan to do a language study for a few months, and would like to bring my 2.5 year old daughter with me. I've looked into language schools (but would love recommendations that aren't in Tokyo!), but I am wondering what the best way to do a family exchange/homestay/child care program would be. I am envisioning doing a homestay with another family that has a child under 5 years old, so that a) my child care needs…

This coming November I am going to spend about 2 weeks in Kyoto and Tokyo.
I am flying into the Itami airport of Osaka and flying out of Tokyo
The numbers correspond to dates.
I have grouped the sights into districts/areas of the two cities and added some day-trips that have been recommended by others in between.
At this moment it seems to be very temple heavy. While I'm interested in seeing cultural stuff, I also like to see some nature or scenery stuff.
I haven't researched into food yet, but I'm…

Just noticed with our current itinerary that we would be in Kyoto around the Gion Matsuri or at least for the processions that take place prior to the main festival (i.e on 14-15 July). Is this a good idea or not? It would be cool to be there to see the festival but I guess it will mean the city and all the usual attractions will be very crowded. Will it already be hard to find reasonably priced and convenient accommodation at this time?

We would like to fly from Tokyo Hanada and travel straight to Miyajima Island at the start of our Japan trip. Should we fly to Hiroshima or maybe Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport? The later seems closer to Miyajima Island - will it also be easy to get there via public transport?

Heading to Japan for a week in the middle of may (19-26.) We can go pretty much anywhere in the country... Looking for a place to do some overnight mountain hiking. We would like to stay in mountain huts where possible, and we would like to access the alpine as much as possible. But of course the issue will be snow on the trails and huts may be closed.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to hike? Looking for something about 2 to 4 days in length. We can be pretty self sufficient (have…

Is it worth visiting Kamikochi for a day in summer? It would either be a one night stop between Takayama and Matsumoto or a day trip from one of these cities. I'm worried it might be too busy in summer to be enjoyable since the short time would mean we were only seeing the most popular areas and I am also concerned that it might be too rainy for enjoyable hiking.
