The city of Okayama has the widest-ranging eating options by day and late into the night, with international options and good, modern restaurants within the train-station complex. There are pockets of cute, small restaurants and cafes on the islands and in Kurashiki. Look out for the Okayama specialities bara-zushi (ばらずし; layers of cooked seafood on rice) and mamakari, a sardine-related fish used in sushi.
